My name is Rachel Buchanan. I’m thrilled to be joining the team at
Ascent Academy as Librarian!
I graduated with a BA in Elementary Education in 1997 and have been
involved in education ever since. I first started out as a long term sub, a
para, and finally a teacher. The first teaching job I had was 3rd grade. I
moved on to teach 6th, 7th, and 8th graders with autism and other
disabilities. This was the hardest but most rewarding job I’ve ever had!
I was born and raised in Oakland, California. When I was very little, I
knew I wanted to be a teacher or a doctor. My heart pulled me in the
teacher direction, and I am so glad it did! My love for books began at 8
years old when I read, The Great Brain at the Academy. I read anything I
could get my hands on after that! Choose Your Own Adventure books,
the Little House on the Prairie series, and Judy Blume books were a few
of my favorites. My very favorite book of all time is, Miss Suzy.
I live in Syracuse with my wonderful husband of 24 years. We have the
coolest 21 year old son, a dog, 5 cats, and 2 chinchillas. In my free time,
I like to listen to all kinds of music, play practical jokes on my friends
and family, travel, read mysteries, play card and board games, and
watch comedies and scary movies.
I can’t wait to get to know you and the students. I’m so happy to be
able to share my love of books and reading with them!
